Airelles Le Grand Contrôle beckons to those with a passion for history, a love for all things French, and a penchant for the good life, promising a singular experience that transcends the ordinary. For history buffs, Francophiles, and bons vivants alike, this is an opportunity that unfolds like a dream—an encounter with the grandeur of Versailles that lingers as a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

Versailles is a single word that conjures enchantment and magic. Spanning over 800 hectares, it encompasses the grandeur of the Palace, the exquisite gardens, the sprawling Park, the Trianon estate, and various town buildings. Versailles stands as the epitome of French heritage from the “Grand Siècle,” a time when the French language resonated across every European Court. Its allure transcends borders, inspiring palaces like Peterhof in Russia and Schonbrunn near Vienna.

Back in history, Louis XIII’s hunting lodge laid the foundation, but it was Louis XIV, who transformed it into a majestic symbol of his reign. Louis XV and Louis XVI each left their mark, with Marie Antoinette’s presence weaving through Versailles until the French Revolution. Since the 19th century, Versailles has stood as a museum, thanks to efforts like John D. Rockefeller’s restoration in the 1920s.
Enter Le Grand Contrôle, a place where the grandiose French Château life comes alive. Part of the esteemed Airelles portfolio, this hotel, which opened in June, resides within the park of the Palace of Versailles. With exclusive access to the Palace, the Trianon Domain, and the Orangerie Gardens, it’s a historical immersion like no other.
Within the lavish confines of Airelles Le Grand Contrôle, each of the 13 accommodations is a masterpiece in its own right. I had the privilege of residing in the Madame de Staël suite, a name that resonates with history, as it pays homage to the renowned writer, philosopher, and queen of the French salon circuit during Marie-Antoinette’s era, who once graced these very halls.

This exquisite 1,600-square-foot suite is a sensory journey through time, enveloped in Pierre Frey fabric reminiscent of Marie-Antoinette’s cherished Petit Trianon and enchanting gardens. From its vantage point, the suite offers panoramic views of the Lake of the Swiss Guards, the majestic palace, and the picturesque Orangery. Stepping into this haven, it takes no time to assume the regal role that comes with such opulent surroundings—a queen in her private quarters, immersed in the echoes of a bygone era.

General Manager Julien Revah, a maestro in hospitality, orchestrates an unforgettable stay. The 14 rooms and suites, named after historical figures, exude elegance without ostentation. Opt for the Madame de Fouquet Suite for a truly regal experience, housed in a 400-year-old building with a decor inspired by Madame de Fouquet herself.

Le Grand Contrôle’s interior is a living history class, accompanied by Baroque and classical playlists. Architect and designer Christophe Tollemer, along with a team of skilled artisans, spent four years ensuring every detail respects the original building’s spirit.
Culinary excellence reaches new heights with Alain Ducasse’s aristocratic dining experience, from royal breakfasts to the fabulous Grand Couvert at night. The Valmont spa, influenced by the Château de Versailles, offers a serene retreat, including the exclusive “Miroir Majesteux” treatment inspired by Marie Antoinette’s beauty rituals.

The experience at Le Grand Contrôle extends beyond the hotel’s walls. Guests have private access to the Palace of Versailles after hours, exploring the Grands Appartements, the Royal Opera, the Royal Chapel, and the iconic Hall of Mirrors. The Trianon estate, the Grand Trianon, and the Orangerie gardens are open for exploration, allowing guests to witness the enchanting beauty of Versailles without the crowds.
In every corner, Le Grand Contrôle invites guests to open their eyes, engage their senses, and marvel at the indescribable beauty of Versailles. It’s an experience that transcends time, offering a privileged glimpse into the splendour and sumptuousness of a legendary era.
