With their much anticipated Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana feminised the menswear silhouettes this season, with tailoring tricks long deployed for women. The wide-ranging collection of nearly 80 looks was a departure for the designing duo in any season, a play on quiet luxury. There were no prints, no colour and no bling. Instead, the focus was on shape and materials, with a neutral colour palette of black, white and camel and ivory. By smoothly merging the strands of contemplation and artistic advancement, this one-of-a-kind ensemble articulates a need for stability in a continuously changing fashion landscape.
By offering a modern version of their established guidelines, the collection highlighted a combination of advancement and maintaining their recognised appearance. The designers underlined the need of a strong sense of self and solid foundations, underlining the relationship between personal identity and style. Domenico Dolce distinguished between style and fashion, emphasising their ambition to create something new while keeping true to their own personal style.
This concept of essentialism is not synonymous with severe reductionism, but rather with a perceptible tendency towards contemporary simplicity. The attraction of slim lines, gentle, flowing motions, and a subtle colour palette is highlighted only by the odd polka-dotted chiffon shirt in the collection. It revels in paradoxes, contrasting sculptural precision with a play of sensuous transparencies, minimal stitching, and Alta Moda organza flowers.
Transparencies were utilised to evoke sensuality rather than overt sexuality, demonstrating the designers’ sophisticated approach. Embellishments were sparingly incorporated, with sparsely embroidered details adorning crisp Oxford ensembles. The influence of Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda heritage was evident as organza flowers were delicately pinned on lapels, adding a touch of ethereal beauty.

The Italian firm describes the collection as a carefully selected assortment that embodies the effortless style of a discerning and enlightened man. Quilted garments also jump out this season in D&G: “Embracing a spirit of innovation and craftsmanship, the padded pieces redefine volume with a harmonious blend of exploration, aesthetics, and technology,” the brand shared.

The show invitation arrived in a black envelope that contained a metal replica of a credit card, along with a booklet of collection images. The word STYLE was printed in uppercase on its first page. “The credit card is an indicator, a symbol of identity. You are its sole owner, it’s about being who you are. Style is also about having a strong identity, solid foundations,” explained Stefano. “‘Style’ is quite different from ‘fashion.’ So, we’ve tried to do something new, but within the codes of our own style, keeping it firm and recognizable while evolving,” Domenico chimed in.

With the release of this collection, Domenico and Stefano need not worry about leaving a lasting impression. Men’s fashion has always been a means of self-expression for them, and for the Spring/Summer season, they have delved into their repertoire to present a series of familiar elements that have been reinterpreted in a renewed and simplified manner. The list of signifiers includes a sleeveless T-shirt, their signature black colour, the Coppola hat, the rosary, lace, transparency, and references to Sicily, among others. “But above all, it’s the cut and how our tailoring is constructed,” they explained.
The collection also features a slim silhouette, occasionally with more spacious cuts, but retaining a soft and fluid feel. absence of prints was notable, except for polka dots on a sheer chiffon blouse adorned with a bow. The collection also featured sensual transparencies, organza flowers, sleeveless T-shirts reinterpreted as bustiers, and fitted T-shirts paired with high-waisted fluid trousers.
“A garment has to fit perfectly on a real body; it doesn’t have to be just modern or cool,” they said. “That’s why the discipline of construction is so important to us.”
In addition to the well-known icons of the Dolce&Gabbana wardrobe, such as the Sicilia, Taormina, and Dolce jackets – now available as small coats or in single and double-breasted styles – the collection also features the DC Logo Bag. This innovative accessory has been designed to cater to the needs of the modern man.
