One of the biggest star-studded events of the year is coming…

On Monday, the 1st – the first Monday in May – The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will host the Met Gala, considered one of the biggest star-studded evening events and referred to by many as: “the Super Bowl of fashion”. It’s the perfect time to start preparing yourself for fashion’s biggest night of the year!
Usually held by editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the Met Gala (aka Costume Institute Gala) is an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It is the perfect gala event to celebrate high and glamorous fashion.
The Met Gala is a stage for our most in-demand celebrities, TikTokers, and people willing to pay a million American dollars for a table at the combined fundraising event. This is how it works: A designer or brand usually pays for a table at the gala, investing from $275,000 and counting. The brand or designer then fills said with celebrities it selects to dress. However, the Met Gala isn’t just a party, it’s a fundraiser for The Costume Institute. Tickets are reported to be increased this year due to inflation (from $30,000 to $50,000).
At past Met Gala galas, we could enjoy Rihanna wearing a gilded headpiece and fur robe, Zendaya wearing a literal dress of armour, and many more fashionable and unforgettable moments on the red carpet. Celebrities usually attend The Metropolitan Museum of Art in stunning ensembles designed by brands and designers from all over the world, and they chose their looks based on a theme.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Met Gala 2023 event. Also, check out some of the biggest celebrity-style moments at the Met Gala red carpets over the years.
WHEN IS THE 2023 MET GALA?
The 2023 annual Costume Institute Benefit “Met Gala” will take place on May 1st, 2023. As it is already known, the Met Gala is always hosted on the first Monday in May every year at the Met in New York, apart from in 2020, when the event was cancelled, and in 2021, when it was held in September, because of the pandemic. This year’s gala is again held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Fifth Avenue, Manhattan) in New York City.
WHAT’S THE THEME?

The late German fashion designer, creative director, photographer, and artist, Karl Lagerfeld will be the subject of this year’s event “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” and corresponding Costume Institute exhibition.
The aim is to honour Karl’s life and work. Guests will have the chance to sour the globe for the most off-theme, eyebrow-raising, or spooky archival looks. The idea is that guests explore the designer’s stylistic language.
The gala’s companion exhibition will run throughout the entire month and well into July. “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” will open to the public on May 5th, 2023.
Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton will be in charge of the exhibition. He emphasized it will not be a “traditional retrospective”. Amanda Harlech will be the show’s creative consultant. She worked closely with Lagerfeld for years.
“The exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments,” Andrew said. “We could not do a traditional retrospective. For one thing, I think Karl would have hated that.”
“Karl never tired of telling me that fashion did not belong in a museum,” he also said. “When we worked on the Chanel show together, he was incredibly generous in what he lent, but he was completely disinterested in the exhibition itself!” he added.
WHO IS ATTENDING THE 2023 MET GALA?

Four celebrities have been chosen 2023 Met Gala co-chairs, including actor Penelope Cruz, singer Dua Lipa, actor Michaela Coel, and tennis player Roger Federer, alongside (and, as always) Anna Wintour. The 2023 Met Gala will be co-chaired by The four of them will also serve as Met Gala 2023 hosts.
However, some of the biggest names in the business regularly attend, such as Beyoncé, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Blake Lively, Billie Eillish, Jennifer Lopez, and more. They are expected to attend this year’s Met Gala event, even though there has been no official announcement yet regarding their appearance.
