She’ll turn up to the airport in sky-high heels, or hit the town in a sporty Martine Rose windbreaker paired with a Prada fur scarf. Whatever the pop sensation chooses to wear on the red-carpet—be-it a couture gown of astronomical proportions at the 2015 Met Gala, or a form-fitting Alaïa gown at the Oscars—her styling choices always command the world’s attention. But when it comes to her off-duty style, Riri is a genius at bringing together seemingly mismatched elements.
After a barrage of iconic fashion looks, it is clear to us that Riri creates her own fashion rules which do not apply to other celebs. There are unsaid yet understood rules that no one dares to violate unless you are Rihanna. This week was no different than the billionaire popstar. She blessed us with not just one but two looks which consisted of elements that no one in their right minds would have chosen, yet Riri carried them in true Riri fashion.
Our first fashion lesson from Riri came from Santa Monica where Riri grabbed dinner at Giorgio Baldi with boyfriend A$AP Rocky by her side. Ever think about pairing a graphic Y2K cap with your grandma’s fur coat?
Well, Riri has! For her night out on the town, Rihanna first built her look around her floor-length fur coat. (Jury’s out on whether it’s faux or not.) The outerwear is giving off “old money” energy, for sure—it’s something you’d see on a chic Upper East Side lady who lunches. But naturally, Rihanna styled it in a more casual-cool way. The singer and business mogul gave it a downtown twist by pairing it with a 2000s-style trucker hat reading “AWGE,” the creative agency founded by A$AP Rocky, as well as a mini Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama top-handle bag (one of the hottest fashion collabs of the year). As always, she finished the look with a pair of her go-to strappy stilettos. The end result is the perfect mixture of timeless and trendy. Leave it to Riri to artfully clash different aesthetics for her mom-on-the-go look.
Our second lesson came from the same spot when Riri went On a date night at celeb-favorite haunt Giorgio Baldi with her partner A$AP Rocky and their baby boy. Rihanna wore a vintage black and white Wu-Tang clan football jersey (a Grailed special, for the die-hard fans out there), a black sheer floor-skimming maxi skirt and a black strappy pair of sandals. The “Diamonds” singer, of course, added even more Hollywood star power with diamond jewelry—including a choker necklace and eye-popping rings—and dark wrap-around shades.
