It’s been quite some time since the Milan Fashion Week began with a mountain of condoms on the Diesel runway. But the controversial symbolism didn’t fail to impress us with the typical Milan flair that is seen every year. This season’s Milan Fashion Week has portrayed a new meaning behind modern Italian tailoring. This Fall/Winter 2023, showgoers showed off their best renditions of the aesthetic with dramatic textures and oversized silhouettes.
Guests are wearing trench coats, but leaving them open enough to expose lace separates underneath. Besides various leather jacket renditions to keep warm, including leather bombers, blazers, and typical biker jackets, long overcoats or textured puffer jackets were a popular outerwear choice. Showgoers kept clean and simple silhouettes, showing that layering took precedent when it came to finding a focal point for their outfits. Bursts of color were seen from time to time with elaborate graphics on sweaters, however, neutral and earthy tones proved to be a strong choice throughout the week. Taking inspiration from the ’80s and ’90s trends including relaxed tailoring for coats, trousers, and more, it appears that blazers and other leather garments are here to stay. They were also wearing last season’s silky Fendi cargo pants, but letting them slide off their hip bones instead of wrapping them close to their torsos. And they’re wearing suits—lots of suits!—but in an extremely non-corporate way, like they’re about to slink away to sip glass after glass of red wine at a pasta sauce-stained table somewhere in Milan.
Maybe everything is just sexier in Milan! The city certainly has a way of bringing that maximalist Italian excess out of everyone. Or maybe it’s simply The White Lotus effect. Either way, Mia, Lucia—and even Donatella and Mrs. Prada—would be proud.
One of the biggest messages is that now it’s time to dress up and be seen. Leave the track suits at home. Ripped jeans were still spotted but they have certainly become the exception rather than the rule!
